Session 01. Alternative Medicines in Cancer
The Alternative Medicines are used to relieve the side effects of cancer treatment without any intake of more medicines to improve the health condition of a patient. Some of the traditional dietary sources like Lycopene, Quercetin, Baicalein, β-Carotene, Curcumin, Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) can also be consumed as alternative medicines.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and 9.6 million deaths has been estimated due to Cancer in the year 2018. In low- and middle-income countries, approximately 70% of deaths are due to cancer. Around one third of deaths from cancer are due to five leading behavioural and dietary risks like: Usage of tobacco and alcohol, Low fruit and vegetable intake, Lack of physical activity, High body mass index.
The highest cancer rate for men and women together was in Australia, at 468.0 people per 100,000. The age-standardised rate was at least 320 per 100,000 for 12 countries: Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Hungary, the US, Belgium, France (metropolitan), Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada and New Caledonia (France). The countries in the top 12 come from Oceania, Europe and North America. According to the annual statistics reporting from the American Cancer Society, over the past 2 decades the death rate from cancer in US has declined steadily.
Oral cavity cancers and lung cancers account for over 25% of cancer deaths. Breast and Oral cavity cancers account for 25% cancers in female. The top five Cancers in men and women account for 47.2% of all cancers; these Cancers can be prevented, screened for and/or detected early and treated at an early stage. This could significantly reduce the death rate from these cancers. Lip, Oral Cavity, Lung, Stomach, Colorectal, Oesophagus are the cancers which majorly occur in men. Breast, Lip, Oral, Cervix, Lung, Gastric are the major cancers that majorly occur in women.
Innovative and new surgeries like Robot-Assisted Surgery are also implemented to treat Cancer. In one gynaecologic study of laparoscopy hysterectomy, the conversion rate of straight stick laparoscopy to open surgery was 25% but at the robotic platform, the conversion rate is typically less than 5%, thus leading to a reduction in morbidity and blood loss.
